I like experimenting with food, but not at home. At home I like to eat what my cook makes. He is very good with Indian food. Though he is Gujarati, he cooks me a fabulous liver and Konkani fish. He is quite adventurous.
Im adventurous when Im eating out. If Im at a Chinese place, I ask the chef to bring me the most unusual dish. I never like to order the predictable dishes that Indians usually do. For me, the rule is to try out one new thing every time that Im eating out. Im love cream-based Italian foods. I always enjoy
good pasta. I like the creamy pasta sauces, though the red sauce pastas are also good.
My next favourite would be Chinese. Im a thorough foodie, eating out all the time. For Continental I like Indigo and Olive, Goan at Jai Hind or Trishna, Chinese at Henry Tham and Kamling. The satays and sushis from Wasabi.
Tiffin is good. Though it isnt a very upscale place. I like the atmosphere at Kamling. And I love to eat at Bombay Gym, they have great food from Moshe. As a child, I remember, my mother wouldnt send the driver until 6.30 to the gym because I was busy playing tennis and squash when I wasnt swimming. For lunch, my friends and I would order whatever we wanted and sign away to glory at the club. Now my all time favourites are Sesso and Lemon Grass.
I entertain quite often, not much in the summer though. Once the monsoon starts, Ill entertain more. Usually I like ordering in for my guests. I order food from Candies or Westend. I like the desserts at Candies. I am not a dessert person, but I love chocolates. I also love chocolate chip ice-cream. My favourite sweet is kaju katri.
For a house party, I normally have my whole place lit up with candles. I have 1,600 candles at home. It takes my servants from 6 to 8 p.m. just to light them all for the evening. And thats the only light for the party. I do up the house with floor cushions and window arrangements. House is my work,
that is how people can see the kind of work I do.
The parties are usually at my Bandra residence. It is a beautiful house where I normally invite four to five people at a time. I usually invite people who like each other. Some people from work and some friends put together. When I have a client coming over, I call my friends who are artists. That way we have our own network.
If Im cooking for few close friends then I make my famous steamed mushrooms sauted in butter and garlic. My friends taught me that back in college. I still like making it. Otherwise my personal favourite is egg bhurji. I love it. If I have to make something quick for myself, it has to be egg bhurji. Or Id make a toasted sandwich, a tuna sandwich or simply a salad sandwich. If a guest pops up at the door, Id make some assorted pieces of salami on toast with mayo. Or boils and pasta tossed together. Something light. Basically a quick meal of some fun Italian food.
Im a total foodie. I love our Bombay streetfoods. Every evening at 5 oclock there is a vada pav or sev puri on my table. I love having onion bhajjis in the monsoon. Sometimes, at work, I have a lunch of pav bhaji. I love dahi vada. In Delhi, I like the dahi chaats and chhola. I also like what they call momos, they are steamed Tibetan wontons.
Im a coffee drinker. I dont enjoy teas much. I love cappuccino. I stock up on Starbucks coffees. After that is over I make Nescafe at home. When Im out I like fancy coffee shops at the five stars. I also enjoy Frooti and Diet Coke, but the beverage that everyone swears by is the beaten coffee made by my maid.
This summer I have started having chilled beer. I drink Kingfisher. I dont drink whisky, I would rather have a glass of white or red wine. Sula Chenin Blanc and Grover La Reserva are very good. I only drink Indian wines and alcohols. I feel if we make it here in India, why not have it. Even if I have to gift a bottle to a client I send an Indian wine. And they love it. I travel a lot. All for work. I havent had a single holiday in four years. I have lived for a while in New York.
They have fabulous global food there. I like everything from Egyptian to Polynesian cuisines there. I need to go to Europe, Germany and England. Im not fond of English tea, though. I try to keep myself fit. I was 87 kgs and I went down to 54 kgs from that. Mostly by climbing up stairs and swimming every night after dinner. If I start putting on weight I switch to spicy Indian food. All the masala heats up the system and helps digestion well. I like dals and rice. I love Gujarati dal and dal dhokli. In Punjabi food, I love sarson ka saag and makkai
ki roti. In Sindhi food, I enjoy aloo ka tuk, Sindhi curry and rice. If Ive put on a lot, I just eat fruits for a while. I hate apples. I enjoy the softer, luscious fruits like chikoo, grapes and pears.
Oh, and I love mangoes. They are such luscious fruit!
