Surat nu Jaman

There is a saying in Surat that all Surtis are proud to repeat when an outsider sits back with a sigh of contentment at the end of a satisfying, home-cooked meal: Surat nu jaman ane Kashi nu maran! Which, translated, means fortunate is the man who can dine in Surat and die in Kashi!

It is true that the cuisine of this South Gujarat city is without compare in the entire western state. Surtis are connoisseurs of classic food. The fresh vegetarian produce that goes into their cooking pots is of the finest quality. The Mughlai food of the Surat Nawabs is like no other Muslim food in India. And eating out in the city is de rigeur on Sundays. Every man, from the chairman of a large corporate house to the doorman of a hotel, must take his family out for dinner!
